Staying Safe During a Flood

Heavy rain can bring dangerous flash floods. Prepare ahead now. #BeInformed

We’ve had a wet year which creates the potential for spring flooding. Is your property prone to flooding? Do an assessment of your property to determine what your plan should be if flooding affects your area and consider flood insurance.

During an emergency, always listen to local officials. #BeInformed

  • Follow common preparedness guidelines such as, 72-hour kits, emergency medication supplies, a family evacuation plan and out of area contact.
  • Clean out blockage & debris from gutters, drains, ditches, waterways on your property.
  • Acquire appropriate supplies to protect your home and property such as sandbags.

ACTIVE FLOODING

Never drive through flooded roads. Almost half of flood deaths happen in vehicles. #BeInformed

  • Consider the use of sandbags.
  • Respect road closures & barriers.
  • Follow local responders to safely direct traffic out of flooded areas.
  • Don’t go around or you’ll drown.
  • Don’t walk, swim, or drive through flood waters.
  • Evacuate if you feel unsafe or you are told to do so.
  • If necessary, move to higher ground.
  • Stay off bridges over fast-moving water. Fast-moving water can wash bridges away without warning.
  • Stay inside your car if it is trapped in rapidly moving water.
  • Get on the roof if water is rising inside the car.
