While Utah is currently enjoying a higher level of employment, poverty continues to be challenging. Utah’s Lt. Governor Spencer Cox created an Intergenerational Poverty Committee, or IGP, two years ago, to address how to handle the recurring problem from generation to generation. Lt. Gov. Cox asked counties to put together a plan to address issues related to it.
The goal is to reduce the number of Utah families in the cycle of poverty. Washington County’s IGP Committee is using middle class mentors and education, hoping to change the trend of the families impacted.
Washington County is looking at expanding the Habitat Conservation Plan (HCP) in an area that is being called Zone 6. Zone 6 is generally located south of Santa Clara and west of St. George. This popular area is pivotal for outdoor recreation and tourism in Washington County. As plans continue moving forward with the HCP in this area, it is the intent for Zone 6 to remain open to recreation as well as provide the mitigation for the much needed Northern Corridor.
The County is hosting an open house where the proposed Expansion Bill will be unveiled. Comments from advocates of outdoor recreation groups, as well as all interested parties are being sought at the open house. All are encouraged attend to view maps and learn more about the proposed bill.

Washington County Commissioners voted unanimously to hand over the Rockville/Springdale Fire District to Hurricane Valley Special Fire District.
The change in management is to smooth over budget problems and concerns by citizens in the communities. Much of the problem lies with increased calls in Zion National Park. But some residents still aren’t convinced that fire coverage will be adequate to cover future needs. The RSFD board has until December 2019 to come up with their own solution or become permanent under the Hurricane District.
